Welcome to the LMBB Werkstatt feature. In this series, we’ll invite women who run their own businesses to tell us about what they do – and maybe give you a sweet special offer (see below!). We want to hear from mompreneurs & business women in our community, so get in touch and tell us what you do!
Hello! My name is Julie Leonard from Potentia.
Three years ago, I moved from Scotland to Munich. I had been very independent in Scotland. I had a nice house, a great social life and a 20-year career working for charities. But I was burnt out and looking for a change so I happily packed up and moved for love.
Once I’d had time to relax and recuperate, I started to think about what I could do in Munich for a living. Back home I had studied psychology and worked for mental health charities for over 20 years. I loved the work I did, especially supporting women (many who had experienced trauma), helping them to recover and, even more importantly, to be happy.
I had always wanted to be a life coach and it was the perfect job combining my passion for happiness, my love of working with women and all my years of experience. I also wanted some work-life balance and something that would enable me to work around having a child too. I also wanted to work in English, since my German was and still is not good enough! When I was 6 months pregnant, I gained my coaching diploma.
With my minimal German, I muddled through finding out how to set up a business in Germany and two years ago I launched my life coaching business, Potentia. Now, as part of my coaching business, I support other women to do the same. Many of my clients are expat partners whose husbands are here for work. I work with a lot of culture shock and supporting women to find purpose and meaning in a new country. But in reality, I help women with whatever they want to change in their lives.
Coaching is very positive and about the present and the future: setting goals and making them happen. My background means I am able to work on the blocks keeping women stuck such as fear, low confidence and negative thinking. I truly believe that we can all live to our potential and lead happy and healthy lives. As a mum, I too understand how hard it is to go to appointments or have time for yourself so I offer baby-friendly sessions and child-friendly appointment times as well as online sessions and coach people all over the world.
I loved learning new things back home but struggled to find courses here in English. So now I run regular workshops on decluttering , aromatherapy and mindfulness. You can find out more about my up and coming workshops here. And I am always happy to organise courses for you and a group of friends. simply drop me a message. I also offer a decluttering service and have worked with the whole spectrum of mess from a little bit untidy to not a inch of floor space to be seen. I love helping people find order and gain space to pursue the important things in life.
In the ’80s I developed an allergic reaction to fragrance. It was a total disaster for a teenager during the decade of big hair and makeup! There were no fragrance free products then and so I set out to discover how to use more natural products. I studied for 1 year as a clinical aromatherapist and have been practising aromatherapy massage for over 20 years. Recently, I launched my mobile service: not only do you get an amazing massage but I also come to your house and bring everything you need for a wonderful massage tailored to your needs – wellness, stress reduction, specific ailments, pregnancy and post natal massage. Find more information about mobile massage here.
I have been selling my own handmade natural products for 20 years. My biggest sellers are the arthritis oil, body scrubs and lip balms. Everything is natural with no chemicals or preservatives. I am currently working on a pregnancy and post natal line. You can fin all my products in my Potentia online store.
This year I also launched my AromaParties in Munich. They were a big hit in Scotland. I share a little bit about aromatherapy, how oils work and how you can use them yourself. I bring my products for you to browse and buy and everyone gets a massage too while you hang out and chat. You simply supply the wine and I do everything else!
I know that for many expat women here in Munich it can be difficult to work out what you can do here or to believe that you too can be a successful entrepreneur. I do feel that there are many opportunities in Munich to set up your own business and to be successful too. You just need to find the right support and believe in yourself.
