Looking for a quiet space to grab a coffee where older children are welcome? Mare reviews Cafe Clara, a popular spot in Schwabing.
While special mama-baby places seem to have been popping up everywhere, it can be hard to find somewhere to have a quiet coffee with a friend while your older kids play. Cafe Clara is the place to be on weekdays.
When Cafe Clara opened a few years ago, my kids were about 3 and 5 years old. There is a small and cozy play area featuring a few dinosaurs (which my girls LOVED); a few books (which they stubbornly ignored) and a box of Lego (a hit with boys and girls alike). I took my kids there quite a lot, always buying them a hot chocolate. Cafe Clara serves this in a small size and at a lukewarm temperature so your kids will actually be able to finish their drinks.
During the week, it’s not uncommon to find moms there having a quiet coffee or reading the newspaper while breastfeeding, which is a rarity in Munich where people rather shy away as soon as the boobs come out!
At the weekend, we usually limit ourselves to coffee and cake, although most of the time my husband can’t resist the hearty pastries. If we linger after I finish my fresh ginger tea (which is really fresh and comes in a pot with a cup), I order a glass of bubbly. In the summer I like to have a Hugo which is a glass of prosecco served with mint leaves and elderflower syrup. There is an outside area with benches and blankets for the smokers among us. The terrace, taking up most of the sidewalk, is lovely in summer.
How to get there
Cafe Clara is at Isabellastrasse 8 80798 München. It’s a short walk from the Nordendstraße stop on the 27 & 28 tramlines or get the U2/U8 to Josephplatz.

When to go
During the week Café Clara is typically quiet and peaceful. At the weekend and especially on Sunday morning and afternoon it can be quite full. Families come together to have Sunday morning breakfast and/or brunch, so if you want to do this on the weekend make sure to have a reservation!
Cafe Clara is closed on Mondays; open Tuesday to Friday 10:00-19:00; Saturdays from 9:00-19:00 and Sundays from 10:00-19:00.
Lunch is served 12:00-15:00, all dishes to go.
Great to know
- Fresh cakes, quiches and tartes are sold daily.
- The café is small and fills up quickly because the nice owners allow prams to be taken inside and parked between the small tables.
- A huge playground and a nice shady park are a five-minute walk away at Alte Nordfriedhof.
- For those that are their with young children, there is also a changing table in the women’s washroom.
- The only inconvenient point about Cafe Clara, is that prams should be left in the alley next to the cafe, as there is limited space within the cafe. However, they will make exceptions to bring a pram into the cafe if the baby is fast asleep.
